Automated Digitalization and Reproduction of Historical Ceramic Tiles

The overall goal of the MEMORIAL project is to develop methods for the digital acquisition and automated reproduction of historical tiles and architectural ceramics. Existing ceramic elements are analyzed, digitized, and used to establish a continuous digital process chain ranging from characterization and modeling to manufacturing.

Within the project, historical tiles are first examined in terms of geometry, material properties, and production techniques and transferred into digital models. Based on this, methods for creating digital copies as well as for the simulation and optimization of tooling and manufacturing processes are developed. The results are implemented in prototype tools and used to produce reference tiles, whose quality and authenticity are scientifically evaluated.

The project has a duration of two years. The project is funded within the framework of the Central Innovation Programme for SMEs (ZIM) by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).

For the projects duration from Q4 2024 to Q4 2026, the following objectives are defined:

  • Analysis and digital characterization of historical tiles

  • Development of methods for creating digital twins

  • Simulation and optimization of tooling and manufacturing processes

  • Design and prototypical implementation of tools for tile production

  • Production and analysis of reference and benchmark tiles

  • Scientific evaluation of tile similarity and authenticity

  • Validation of the digital process chain and final documentation
