New Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates Visits TH Wildau - Exchange of Information on Current and Future Projects

On October 8th, 2020 the new Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), HE Hafsa Al Ulama, visited the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau (TH Wildau). Three topics were on the agenda of the Ambassador's first visit to Wildau. First, the Ambassador wanted to get to know the university and the team that coordinates the cooperation with the UAE. Secondly, she was informed about the direct cooperation with the Higher Colleges of Technology in Abu Dhabi (HCT), as well as about a new project that is intended to deepen the exchange between the two countries with company internships.

Getting to know each other

HE Hafsa Abdulla Mohamed Sharif Al Ulama has been UAE Ambassador to Germany since Summer 2020. Her previous posts included Brazil and Montenegro. For the first time a two-hour visit to TH Wildau was on the programme. Together with her embassy colleagues Abdulla Al Hameli, Head of Student Division and Division of Media and Public Diplomacy Affairs,  Uruba Shannaq and Khalfan Al Matrooshi, Head of Economic and Trade Affairs, she met for talks with Prof. Dr. Ulrike Tippe, President of TH Wildau, as well as Prof. Dr. Frank Gillert and Michael Müller, Logistics Department, Prof. Dr. Jörg Reiff-Stephan, Automation Technology Department, Dr. Johannes Görbert, Centre for International Affairs, and Mohamed Athikur Rahman, Logistics student from the UAE who attends the Technical University of Wildau. In addition to getting to know each other personally, they learned about the profile of the university, its strategic and international goals, and students’ everyday life. During a tour of the campus, they were given a glimpse of the modern laboratories.

Successful long-term cooperation

TH Wildau is the only German university that can look back on an uninterrupted cooperation with an Emirati partner university since 2010. Prof. Dr. Frank Gillert and Michael Müller, who are both active in the Emirates with the logistics degree programme, talked about some of the highlights of the partnership with the HCT in Abu Dhabi and, together with the Ambassador, discussed future prospects for intensifying the cooperation of both sides.

After an initial grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the project has been self-financing for some time now and is currently concentrating primarily on guest lectures and advice on the development of new curricula in Abu Dhabi. In addition, several logistics students from TH Wildau have been granted stays at the HCT. The students are happy to pass on the positive experiences gained during these stays in their field reports (see below for further information) in order to kindle the interest of other students in an international study exchange.

Focus on new projects

In addition to their studies, students are also interested in gaining practical experience in companies. Since the beginning of this year, TH Wildau has therefore been involved in the "Tadreeb" initiative, which was launched as part of the German-Emirati task force on "4IR" ("Fourth Industrial Revolution"). "Tadreeb" aims to bring Emirati graduates into contact with German companies.

In order to deepen this topic, the German ambassador to the UAE, HE Ernst Peter Fischer, was additionally connected via an online video conference.

The aim is to enable the students to gain valuable professional experience in companies through internships and thus to establish further close networks between Wildau and the Emirates. This is to be supported by the formation of international student buddy teams, in which, in addition to logistics, other courses of study at TH Wildau, such as automation engineering or aeronautical engineering/aviation management, also participate.
