Wildau has officially been known as a ‘university town’ for a good three months now. Following confirmation by the Ministry of the Interior and Municipal Affairs (MIK) in an official letter at the end of March and the town inaugurating the first of the new town entrance signs with the additional designation together with the TH Wildau - Technical University of Applied Sciences at the beginning of May, all the signs have now been replaced.

Last Thursday, 15 August, Prof. Ulrike Tippe, President of the TH Wildau, and Frank Nerlich, Mayor of Wildau, officially announced that all of the town's entrance signs had been replaced. This means that Wildau is now labelled ‘University Town’ everywhere.

"It will start in September, when the name will also be mandatory. Then we will enter the first session of the new legislative period as a university town and I am delighted that everything is now going according to plan," emphasises Frank Nerlich.

"I am delighted and very grateful that the city council has decided to do this. In my view, this is a very important sign for science and education in this day and age and I look forward to continuing our close collaboration," says Prof Ulrike Tippe.

Background

In the state of Brandenburg, Section 9 (5) of the municipal constitution, which was added in 2013, allows a municipality to ‘use an additional name that refers to the history, character or significance of the municipality’. The municipal council can decide on this addition with a three-quarters majority and it applies if the Ministry of the Interior does not raise any objections in writing within one month of notification of the designation. Since then, around 20 municipalities in Brandenburg have made use of the new regulation. Examples include the ‘water town’ of Fürstenberg/Havel, the ‘glassmaking town’ of Döbern, the ‘lilac town’ of Friesack, the ‘asparagus town’ of Beelitz and now also the ‘university town’ of Wildau.
