Beacon in the region - City of Wildau in 4th place in the ranking of Germany's most family-friendly municipalities
Joint press release by the City of Wildau and the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau:
The town of Wildau is one of the most family-friendly municipalities in Germany. In the KOMMUNAL ranking, it was ranked 4th out of more than 900 comparable municipalities and small towns. Wildau, located southeast of Berlin, was singled out, among other things, for its university, which is certified for family-friendliness and is known throughout Germany, for the large range of educational and sports facilities, the many day-care centres and the good infrastructural connections.
The city of Wildau in Brandenburg is one of the most family-friendly municipalities in Germany. In the current KOMMUNAL ranking, the magazine KOMMUNAL, together with the data analysts from Contor-Regio, looked for the most family-friendly municipalities in Germany based on 67 indicators. All municipalities in Germany with at least 10,000 and at most 20,000 inhabitants were compared.
Of the more than 900 municipalities, Wildau made it into the top 10. Mayor Frank Nerlich: "It makes me very proud that our Wildau came fourth in the ranking of the most family-friendly municipalities in Germany. A big thank you goes to all those involved who made this ranking possible in the first place. Our incentive, also for me as the new mayor, is to keep at it and to bring our town further forward in order to achieve a place among the top three in the next election."
Beacon in terms of family friendliness
According to KOMMUNAL, Wildau is a beacon in terms of family friendliness. This starts with the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau (TH Wildau), which is known beyond the region and has around 3,500 students: For 13 years in a row, the TH Wildau has been awarded the quality seal "Family-friendly university" and is constantly developing its offers to reconcile family with work and studies. Eight percent of the students are parents. This puts the campus university above the national average of six percent[*]. Of these, 19 percent are single parents and depend on special financial and social support. The university's family service office is the place to go for all these concerns - whether young parents need advice on financial help or students need a flexible special study plan to reconcile family and studies. The new offer of flexible childcare is also very much in demand, especially by professors. Regular childcare is available at the university daycare centre and with the childminder.
Prof. Ulrike Tippe, President of TH Wildau: "I am very happy for Wildau and proud that we have been able to help shape the city as a family-friendly place. I would like to thank all the staff at our university who are constantly working to support the compatibility of work, study and family, and we look forward to working with the city of Wildau and our Wildau partners from education, business, sport and culture to continually expand our offerings in this regard."
Sports on the road, focus on young talent and education
Wildau has also long paid special attention to team sports for the whole family. Wildau was already named "Brandenburg's most sporty municipality" in 2006 and is again in the top three this year. The number of members in the sports clubs is strikingly high at around 1,600.
In addition to good transport connections, especially to Berlin, the educational landscape in the village also scores points. With four day-care centres, two primary schools (one of them private), a secondary school, a private grammar school, several academies and a private music school, Wildau is excellently positioned in the education sector. The family-friendly offer in Wildau is rounded off by an indoor swimming pool and a football stadium.
The successful competitors in Germany
Germany's most family-friendly municipality is in Bavaria. It is the town of Eichstätt in Upper Bavaria with 13,000 inhabitants. Neckargemünd in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region is in second place, followed by Königstein im Taunus. The ranking is published in the current issue of the magazine KOMMUNAL (issue December 2022) and on the KOMMUNAL homepage at: https://kommunal.de/familienfreundlichkeit-ranking-2022.
