Whether in teaching, research or transfer, the TH Wildau uses artificial intelligence (AI) in its own processes and course content, develops and analyses new applications with companies, and exchanges new ideas in a university's own team of experts and in networking. Brandenburg's State Secretary for Science, Research and Culture, Tobias Dünow, visited Wildau on 20 January to find out more about these activities.

"The Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau (TH Wildau) is an AI meeting place," introduces Prof. Jörg Reiff-Stephan, Vice President for Studies and Teaching at the university, during his welcome address at the Opportunity Lab on 20 January. Brandenburg's State Secretary for Science, Research and Culture, Tobias Dünow, is visiting the university campus as part of his Brandenburg AI Tour and will be talking to representatives of the university management, professors, partner companies and students about the use of AI in teaching, research and transfer in Wildau.

Artificial intelligence is an interdisciplinary topic at the TH Wildau. The university's own constantly growing network of experts, WIN-KI, makes it possible for AI to be part of the curriculum in the degree programmes and for interdisciplinary courses with AI content to be offered. At the same time, teaching content is also research content and students are actively involved in how, for example, smart living spaces could be designed in the future or intelligent bioanalyses could help to better predict disease patterns and progressions.

The unthinkably large field of application shows what AI could achieve in the future with the help of data, where theory and practice are still drifting apart today. "Data-driven processes and the use of artificial intelligence in a scientific and economic context are characteristic of the rapidly changing professional world. The TH Wildau is facing up to these challenges in teaching, research and transfer work. This is to be seen across the boundaries of the (study) disciplines and is thus reflected in the Wildau Artificial Intelligence Network as well as in the business partner network Net4AI, which networks players in the region with their offers," says Prof Reiff-Stephan.

During his tour, State Secretary Dünow learnt about the possibilities of so-called predictive algorithms in households as an example of the extensive activities at the TH Wildau. In combination with the appropriate technology, they make it possible, among other things, to recognise appliances used in the household and the associated energy-saving possibilities via intelligent control or help to recognise emergency situations in people through special user profiles and sensors in homes.

Wherever AI potential lies dormant, the broad-based Brandenburg AI network NET4AI brings its partners together to develop application-orientated technologies. One of these partners is TITUS Research, which conducts research into autonomous systems and, among other things, enables boats to sail without a captain.

During the tour of the campus, examples from the RoboticLab, the library, the digital learning factory "Wildauer Maschinen Werke" and an AI roadshow showed how closely teaching, studying and transfer are linked.

AI at the Wildau Science Week 2023

If you would like to find out more about AI, you can make a note of the 12th edition of Wildau Science Week from 28 February to 3 March 2023, which will also focus on AI.
