In 1991, studies began at the TH Wildau with just 17 mechanical engineering students. Today, 30 years later and with almost 3,700 students, the university on the outskirts of Berlin can look back on an eventful past and development, which we will celebrate  appropriately. Various events will take place throughout the anniversary year.

"We celebrate knowledge!" - is the motto of the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau (TH Wildau) this year. In 1991, 30 years ago, the then Wildau Technical College was founded. Studies began with just 17 students in mechanical engineering. Today, 30 years later, the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau has almost 3,700 students, including over 600 international students from 80 countries. To celebrate the anniversary, various events will be held throughout the year, for students, employees, alumni and guests from the region and beyond. Due to the ongoing Corona pandemic, some events that were planned on campus will take place digitally, with just as much celebration to them. The project team has come up with quite a few ideas and has also created its own website.

President Prof. Ulrike Tippe is looking forward to the coming weeks and months: "The year 2021 is a very special year for our university. The developments of the last three decades towards a modern, research-strong, regionally rooted and internationally networked campus university are a true success story for us and we look forward to celebrating this with students, employees, partners and guests from Germany and abroad."

What Is Planned for the Anniversary Year?

The official kick-off with a focus on "30 years of research and transfer" is the Science Week from 8 to 12 March 2021. This is another smaller anniversary of its own, as the Science Week is already taking place for the tenth time - this year in an online format. Over five days, speakers will present the current state of applied and basic research on current topics in digital conferences, symposia, expert meetings and workshops. In addition, virtual laboratory tours and a digital poster exhibition offer further insights into scientific fields of expertise. The Wildau Science Week is aimed at both a specialist audience and the interested general public.

In April, as planning presently stands, two dates will be entirely under the sign of shared movement and activity: the walking day for students and employees and, fittingly for the occasion, a 30-hour run in Wildau's Otto Franke Stadium. On 19 June 2021, the first Homecoming Day of TH Wildau will take place to ceremoniously honour the graduates of the final year 2019/2020. Introduced by the Wildau Music Day in the morning, the day will end - conditions permitting - with all participants and guests at a cosy campus festival.

The actual anniversary celebration of the year will be celebrated by the university together with companions, partners, students, employees and guests on 22 October 2021 - the anniversary of the foundation of TH Wildau.

A Unique Industrial Location Even Before 1991

More than 125 years of industrial history have left their mark on the university town of Wildau. From 1898, Berliner Maschinenbau AG, formerly Schwartzkopff, built one of the largest and most modern locomotive factories in Europe here. Systematic engineering training began in 1949 with the founding of the technical school for locomotive and wagon construction. This led to the establishment of the Technical College for Locomotive and Rolling Stock Construction (ISW) in 1964. It is considered the immediate predecessor of today's TH Wildau and quickly gained a good reputation with the education of mechanical engineering students.

"The many years of engineering education on our campus were an important milestone on the way to the founding of our university. With an awareness of this tradition and a view to modern working and living environments, we will continue to shape research and teaching for the future and fulfil our social responsibility," says Prof. Tippe.

Appeal and Further Information

In addition to the events, the organising team is planning an exhibition, eyewitness accounts, anniversary stories and much more over the course of the year. Those interested in sharing their experiences and anecdotes or providing photos of historical stages of TH Wildau and the campus are welcome to send them by email to 30jahre(at)th-wildau.de or contact the team in this way.
