Sustainable Spatial Concepts at the University

Affiliated with the Center for Research and Transfer, the “Innovative Spatial Concepts” division supports the transfer activities of the Technische Hochschule Wildau – Technical University of Applied Sciences. The focus is on expanding and further developing collaborative work formats in teaching, research, and transfer. This is achieved, for example, through concepts such as coworking, co-innovation, co-creation, and other formats that promote flexibility and innovation at a modern university.

Vision StatementOpen areaClose area

"In light of the rapidly changing educational landscape and the next generation of students, the division aims to develop an open and forward-looking learning environment that fosters interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration, and is planning a sustainable and inclusive campus structure. To achieve this goal, the existing infrastructure at TH Wildau must be gradually redesigned and expanded.

Together, we will create customized solutions for a forward-looking campus. Resource-efficient and sustainable concepts will effectively drive the digitalization and increased flexibility of structures and processes at the university. This is currently being achieved, among other things, by involving all user groups (students, faculty, staff, and entrepreneurs). The goal is to provide the various user groups at the TH with an optimal teaching, learning, and working environment that supports self-directed work in the future. In this way, the various users articulate practical and application-oriented needs. Driven by innovative impulses from social, economic, and technological developments, new and independent formats are taking shape at the academic institution; their characteristics are defined by the spatial conditions and necessitate the development of large-scale projects."

Teaching and Learning Spaces of the Future

What's the plan? Why and how?Open areaClose area

What’s in the plans?

Future-oriented teaching, as well as the digitization and increased flexibility of structures and processes – TH Wildau aims to offer an unlimited variety of interdisciplinary transfer formats and application formats.

A sustainable campus, as well as modern work and living environments – TH Wildau aims to expand the use of its existing facilities in a way that meets the needs of specific user groups (rapid spatial and functional changes). Users should also be able to utilize the spaces for innovative co-creation processes. In addition to increasing space capacity, however, it is also important to establish a sustainable approach and, consequently, an accessible structure.

Why are we doing this?

Reforming learning and teaching spaces – TH Wildau aims to proactively initiate the process of increasing flexibility for creativity-enhancing teaching units, a trend already emerging in the (higher) education landscape. Additionally, the university aims to offer a higher quality of the campus experience.

How are we doing this?

Gradual optimization – The existing infrastructural framework is to be functionally expanded step by step to unlock untapped potential. This will involve increased use of modular furniture, as well as the timely and methodologically appropriate application of digital and analog media.

New furniture in the rooms of House 13

April 8, 2022 – New Furniture in the Teaching and Learning Rooms in Building 13

At the start of the summer semester, five seminar rooms in Building 13 were equipped with new, flexible furniture. Rooms 13-027, 13-036, 13-037, 13-054, and 13-123, there is now modular furniture (single-seat tables, chairs with writing trays, and furniture carts) designed to offer you an unlimited variety of interdisciplinary, future-oriented, and creativity-enhancing formats for your classes.

The new furniture frees you from rigid layouts, and the lightweight tables allow for quiet, easy, and quick reconfiguration. Therefore, all TH users are invited to thoroughly test out the spaces. Not only teaching and student learning but also formal and informal meetings can take place here. A detailed description of the rooms can be found here.

To help your working group make the best use of the rooms, we are gradually making improvements to them. Next on the agenda are writable walls and modular partitions. Please feel free to let us know what’s still missing in the rooms or what could be improved. For the upcoming semester, we’re therefore looking for volunteers to test the rooms as part of an evaluation team. Your feedback helps us continuously improve the spaces. We look forward to working with you.

InnoX 2021 – Science Festival

September 23, 2021 – Open Spaces: Where Innovation Takes Shape

Open Labs, Open Science?! Labs as Open Spaces for Innovation – This discussion format addresses the question of the prerequisites and conditions for implementing and establishing so-called “open labs” as open spaces within the higher education landscape. What conditions must be in place within the administrative framework to make this happen? What structural challenges arise? Above all, however: How can we motivate researchers and university members to use a lab? The participants in this session have gained experience with and around labs as open spaces in various contexts and will share their insights.
