Annual Meeting at the TH WildauOpen areaClose area

For doctoral candidates holding positions funded through qualification schemes at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau or through the BMFTR-funded “FH Personal” programme, the Annual Meeting takes place at the end of each year as part of the university’s quality assurance measures. The meeting brings together doctoral candidates, their supervisors and the steering committee of the Graduate College at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau.

During the meeting, doctoral candidates give a presentation on their progress with their doctoral research over the past year, highlight significant findings and outline current challenges. These are then discussed in a plenary session. Based on these discussions, the steering committee develops written recommendations for action for the doctoral candidates. This allows the doctoral research projects to be reviewed and concrete next steps to be agreed upon.

Participation in the Annual Meeting is by invitation only.

16 October to 4 December - Workshop series "Using AI in Your Doctoral Research"Open areaClose area

Fully booked – if you are interested, please feel free to contact us at graduiertenkolleg(at)th-wildau.de

How can AI be used effectively in doctoral research and everyday academic work – and where are the limits and grey areas? In this workshop series with Dr. Johanna Scheel, participants will have the opportunity to explore different AI applications hands-on and apply them to concrete tasks from their own research and academic work – from structuring and analysing data to working with texts and organising their work. The workshops will also address data protection, legal and institutional requirements, as well as research integrity and good scientific practice, including how to document and appropriately cite the use of AI. Participants are encouraged to bring their own experiences, questions, and examples, creating space for discussion, reflection, and shared learning. The aim is to build confidence in using AI as a responsible and effective tool while safeguarding academic integrity, individual scholarly contribution, and responsibility.

A few days away from your usual workplace to focus on your writing in a calm and concentrated environment — that is the idea behind the Writing Workshop. Together, we create a structured writing environment with dedicated writing sessions and optional mini-workshops (e.g. “How can I get into writing more quickly?”, “How do I structure an introduction?”, “How can I stay productive throughout the day?”). These sessions are led by experienced writing coach Dr Martina Michalikova. Short yoga sessions support active recovery and help participants stay motivated and focused on their own writing throughout the day.

On request, the writing coach also offers individual 25-minute one-to-one sessions, which can include targeted feedback on your text.

When: 9–11 November 2026, 9 am–5 pm each day

Where: Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau campus, Room 15-101 (map)

“Patent Searching: Know-How!” – In-person workshop in Building 14, Room B105

Thursday, 5 November 2026, 9:00–11:00 am

Patent literature searches should be an integral part of your work when developing innovations. Patent literature contains 80–90% of all technical knowledge. In this workshop, you will gain specialist knowledge about patents and patent databases. Using practical examples, we will show you how to conduct searches for different purposes and where and how to carry out your research. You will then conduct your own search in the DEPATISnet patent database, with our guidance and support throughout the process.

The workshop will be led by Yijian Tang and Dr Jörn Glökler from the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau.

25 November 2026 – Workshop “When Academic Research Meets Parenthood”Open areaClose area

Equal parenting is often considered a matter of course in academia and among researchers. However, the data tell a different story. Balancing care work, paid employment, and the mental load associated with both family and professional life pushes parents to their limits. There are few established role models and still very few practical recommendations for action. This workshop is aimed at parents working in academia, particularly doctoral candidates, postdocs and professors.

The aim of the workshop is to raise awareness and lay the foundations for equal parenting. To this end, we will introduce concepts of equal parenting, explore how care responsibilities are divided between partners, and then practise practical tools for negotiating a fairer distribution of responsibilities.

Both parents are explicitly welcome to attend. Partners of researchers are also warmly invited, even if they are not affiliated with one of the four Brandenburg universities of applied sciences (UAS). In this case, we ask them to register separately and briefly indicate in the comments field which member of the university the person is associated with. Of course, it is also possible for only one parent to participate.

When: 25 November 2026, 9 am–12 noon

Where: Online

Who: Doctoral candidates, postdocs, professors and their partners

Language: German

Instructor: Dr. Lena Eckert from Netzwerk Mutterschaft und Wissenschaft (website: https://lenaeckert.org/)

Annual Doctoral Day of Brandenburg’s Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS)Open areaClose area

To promote exchange among early-career researchers at Brandenburg’s universities of applied sciences (UAS), the four UAS jointly launched the Doctoral Day in 2024. Held annually, the event provides targeted information on doctoral studies through panel discussions, discussion sessions and workshops. It also makes an important contribution to raising the profile of and fostering connections among doctoral candidates, those interested in pursuing a doctorate and supervisors at the UAS.

The first Doctoral Day 2024 took place at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam under the theme “Pursuing a Doctorate at a University of Applied Sciences: Opportunities, Challenges and Perspectives”. Read the report.

The second Doctoral Day 2025 took place at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development as preparations for the state-wide Graduate school progressed. Read the report.

The third Doctoral Day 2026 was held at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Brandenburg on 1 September 2026 under the theme “Interdisciplinarity, Input and Interaction”. For the first time, the event also focused on supervisors of doctoral research projects. Read the report.

The fourth Doctoral Day will take place at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau in autumn 2027. Further information will be announced in due course.

Doctoral CompassOpen areaClose area

The combination of practice-oriented teaching, application-oriented research, and active knowledge and technology transfer is a defining characteristic of universities of applied sciences (UAS) and is also reflected in the Graduate school of Brandenburg’s UAS. In addition to conducting research in their specific fields, doctoral candidates benefit from a supportive doctoral programme that offers further subject-specific and interdisciplinary training, opening up a range of career opportunities. A key added value of pursuing a doctorate within the Graduate school lies in integrating the doctoral research project into a supportive accompanying programme. To this end, the resources of all participating UAS are pooled to develop a suitable programme. The result is the establishment of a Doctoral Compass with a modular structure, enabling it to address the individual challenges and needs of doctoral candidates more effectively.

The Doctoral Compass provides knowledge and skills in all areas relevant to pursuing a doctorate. Each thematic area of the Doctoral Compass offers a range of formats, including lectures, self-study courses on Moodle, workshops and summer schools. These are aligned with the different stages of the doctoral process and can be taken by doctoral candidates as needed.
