Lunch & Learn: The power of our roots - how social background affects educational and career opportunities | Valentin Burgert

Type of event: Talks / lectures
Venue: Webex
Organiser: Central Department Diversity, Career Centre for Professorial Development

Did you know that for every 100 children from academic families, an average of 78 start university, compared to only 25 children from non-academic families? So anyone who has made it to university as a first-time graduate has already overcome a major hurdle. But the challenges do not end there: social background also plays a major role when it comes to starting a career and climbing the career ladder. At this event, we will show you what equal opportunities look like in Germany, what typical hurdles exist on the educational and career path and what support is available.

Speaker

Valentin Burgert is Project Manager for Social Impact at the non-profit organisation Netzwerk Chancen, which promotes equal opportunities and social diversity. He regularly gives lectures and workshops at universities and in companies to raise awareness of social background as a key dimension of diversity. He is also doing a PhD at the Institute for Intercultural Communication at LMU Munich.

Lunch & Learn

... means lunch and still picking up new ideas - the new online format, initiated by the Career Centre for Professorial Development (KpE), offers exciting input on various university-related topics. In cooperation with Ray Trautwein, Diversity Manager at TH Wildau, Lunch & Learn begins with a series of contributions focusing on the topic of diversity in organisations.

Note on accessibility

The events will be held in spoken German. In the Q&A part, we will do our best to cater to individual language needs (DE/EN). You can find all info on the format on the website.
