The project develops AI algorithms for precise predictions and statements about
wood ageing processes based on empirical research data sets.

German version

AI-supported prediction and visualisation of wood ageing processes

The overall goal of the WAVE project is to predict wood ageing processes using AI algorithms. As part of the project, the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) is conducting laboratory tests to determine the extent to which coating systems on regionally grown woods influence colour change due to solar radiation and is generating data sets from this. With the help of the laboratory data, the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau will train AI algorithms that can accurately predict the ageing processes of regional woods. The predictions generated will also be integrated into visualisation models such as XR environments.

The funded project is scheduled to run for a period of 2.5 years. The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The following objectives have been defined for the period from Q1 2025 to Q3 2027:

  • Processing of empirical wood ageing data from untreated woods for AI
  • Development and training of an AI algorithm for predicting ageing processes
  •     Irradiation of surface-coated regional woods
  •     Integration of measurement data into the AI and layer thickness modelling
  •     Testing and evaluation of the AI's prediction results depending on time and irradiation dose
  •     Creation of demonstrators to visualise the predicted ageing phenomena
