Diversity, culinary delights, music and dance: intercultural exchange at the International Afternoon at TH Wildau
With more than 20 percent foreign students from more than 70 countries, TH Wildau is a place of diversity and multiculturalism, and the university celebrates this once a semester at the International Afternoon, as it did recently on November 14, 2024. At a total of 20 tables, students and employees presented their home countries and took visitors on a journey around the world.
Twice a year, in the summer and winter semesters, the International Office at Wildau University of Applied Sciences (TH Wildau) invites students to an International Afternoon. Last week, on November 14, 2024, it was time again. Students and employees presented traditional dishes, typical clothing and small souvenirs from their home countries in the foyer of Hall 17. Visitors were greeted by delicious smells as soon as they entered Hall 17 and were able to embark on a short trip around the world with all their senses at the various tables. A total of 20 countries were represented, including Egypt, Belgium, Turkey, Mexico, France, Malaysia and the Philippines. The International Office of the TH Wildau also provided information about international study programs and services, for example about possible stays abroad at a partner university of the TH Wildau. The Student Council (StuRa) of the TH Wildau also presented itself with a stand as a contact point for the students of the Wildau University of Applied Sciences.
Prof. Ulrike Tippe, President of TH Wildau, opened the event with great pleasure: “The International Afternoon has been a fixed and great date in our calendar of events for many years and it fills me with pride that we use it to set an example for diversity, cosmopolitanism and tolerance. The proportion of foreign students at our university is currently around 23 percent and it is a matter close to my heart, especially in these times, to offer an open space as a university to study, teach and work together in a peaceful and respectful atmosphere.”
Strengthened by the traditional delicacies, Belgian students then got down to dancing. A singing performance by a student from the Philippines was a Christmas highlight, as Christmas there begins in September and lasts almost 130 days into January.
New this year was the country table voting, where visitors could vote for their favorite country table. First place went to Malaysia, second place to Bangladesh to great cheers and third place to Azerbaijan. The students each received a trophy specially made in the ViNN:Lab, the creative makerspace at TH Wildau.
“When I look at the happy faces of the participants and, of course, visitors to our International Afternoon, I know that the organization was worth it. It is now my 13th event, but I am thrilled every time anew when everyone laughs, dances, sings and simply has fun together. It motivates me and proves that togetherness counts - regardless of language barriers and cultural differences,” says Carolina Winkler, organizer of the International Afternoon at TH Wildau.
Save the Date: The next International Afternoon will take place in the summer semester 2025 on May 8, 2025. Students, employees and citizens from the region are cordially invited.
