The new class of the Wildau Foundation Year (WFY), an international study preparation programme at TH Wildau – Technical University of Applied Sciences, was officially welcomed recently. After introductory words from the team, the participants received all the important information about the programme before they start their courses in the coming days and weeks.

The 2024/2025 winter semester at the TH Wildau is about to start. For prospective students from abroad who wish to study in Germany, the start of their studies depends on the individual educational certificates from their home country. In some cases, they have to complete a preparatory programme before starting their studies. The Wildau Foundation Year (WFY) at TH Wildau prepares prospective students from abroad for a Bachelor's degree programme in terms of subject and language. Last week, the official welcome event for the new year of the Wildau Foundation Year took place. 48 participants from 17 countries, including Egypt, Angola, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Congo, Mauritius, Syria and Ukraine, will be supported every step of the way in a two-semester programme, from the application process to the start of their studies.

After the welcome address by Prof. Stefan Kubica, Vice President for Digitalisation and Quality Management, the programme team welcomed the participants to the campus of TH Wildau and explained the main programme content. In addition, the lecturers introduced themselves and answered questions from those present.

How is the programme structured in concrete terms?

Participants can choose between a ‘T’ course, which prepares them for technical and engineering degree programmes, and a ‘W’ course, which prepares them for economics degree programmes. German language skills are taught in addition to the subject-specific lessons. The aim is to take the German Language Test for University Entrance (DSH). Specialist German and academic skills are also part of the programme. Laboratory practicals provide an exciting insight into science and technology.

‘We wish the new participants a good start here at TH Wildau and hope to be able to prepare them as well as possible for studying in Germany. They will be exposed to many new impressions and we want to offer them the best possible support and advice with our programme,’ says Claudia Steinborn-Maglóczki, Administrative Director of the Wildau Foundation Year.

Background

The participants of the Wildau Foundation Year have a diverse academic background. This does not always allow direct entry into the Bachelor's degree programme. The team at TH Wildau checks the certificates and provides support during the application process. However, the programme is not just about subject-specific preparation. Rather, the programme gives participants a smooth start in Germany, as they receive comprehensive support in official matters, for example when applying for a residence permit and much more. In addition, they get to know the university from the outset, make use of the sports and cultural activities on offer, the library and canteen and network with former participants and students at TH Wildau. This makes it easier for them to start their future degree programme.
