Cultural diversity in art and technology combined: Unique student project at TH Wildau invites you to an inspiring vernissage

Students at the Technical University of Applied Sciences in Wildau bring traditions from 14 nations to life – creatively, modernly and surprisingly. In a special exhibition created in collaboration with the Film University Babelsberg, they showcase their diverse perspectives combined with state-of-the-art technology. The results can be admired on the Wildau campus from 17 December.

Artificially presenting traditions and rituals using the latest technologies: this was the task set for international students at the Technische Hochschule Wildau (TH Wildau) in a special project carried out in collaboration with the Film University Babelsberg.

Under the guidance of a designer, the students worked on an interdisciplinary study module to develop their own rituals and traditions from a total of 14 nations into an immersive, artistic exhibition using the highest technological standards – from classic ‘coffee and cake’ to emotional Armenian folk tales to the poetic Portuguese music style ‘Fado’.

Interactive exhibition and opening reception on 17 December

The results will be on display physically at TH Wildau and digitally on the university's iCampus, as well as immersively via Apple Vision Pro. Visitors will even be able to walk on real beach sand on site – in the middle of winter. The exhibition will open with a vernissage on 17 December, starting at 10 a.m., in the foyer of Hall 17 – accompanied by a blue-glittering live on-site experience.

Unique project by TH Wildau and Film University Babelsberg

Background: The project is unique in its form. Lydia Göse, Professor of Digital Marketing at TH Wildau, brought together students from various degree programmes and departments in an interdisciplinary module. The project was developed in cooperation with Prof. Angelica Boehm from the Film University Babelsberg, the iCampus team at TH Wildau, which develops web-based tools and information structures for and at TH Wildau, as well as the university's virtual reality laboratory and the Designbüro Oficina Design.

With the exhibition, the participants want to show that despite their diversity, all cultures have one thing in common: they live on the same planet, which needs to be cared for.

To this end, the students are using democratic methods, design thinking processes and the latest technologies, with the aim of making TH Wildau a “Spielraum für Innovation” and communicating this to various target groups outside the university. The exhibition makes it clear that the students have contributed their ideas, arguments and time far beyond the usual commitment of a course – not least because the project means a lot to them.

‘It felt like I was part of the backstage crew of a live show’ – comments on the exhibition

Prof. Lydia Göse, TH Wildau: "This project shows what happens when international perspectives, state-of-the-art technologies and artistic freedom come together: an immersive world of experience that touches, inspires and connects in equal measure. With extraordinary commitment, our students and partners have shown what creative and innovative higher education can look like – open, experimental and deeply human."

Federica, one of the students involved in the project: "As a child, I was always fascinated by what happens behind the scenes. At the theatre, I tried to peek through the curtains; when watching films, I always looked for the making-ofs on the DVDs and later for outtakes on YouTube. When you're young and inexperienced in the world of work, you don't think about the fact that the same fascinating magic applies to everything else we experience in everyday life. Everything was once a plan and was then realised by a team of people. This project is one of those practical experiences that make you realise how much work, time and emotion goes into making something happen; in this case, an event and a digital exhibition.

Megane, also a student involved in the project: "This project felt like being part of the backstage crew of a live show – fast-paced, creative and full of smart decisions. I learned how to turn an idea into something that people really want to engage with, while remaining flexible and focused throughout the process. It was an exciting opportunity to expand my skills and experience the thrill of bringing a project to life.
