Hardware recommendations for online teachingOpen areaClose area

Due to the current situation and the resulting continuation and expansion of online courses, it is necessary to define hardware recommendations for laptops for students.

In doing so, we take into account the results of a corresponding survey, the hardware requirements of the software used and the empirical values from our supervision.

General recommendations:

  • Processor: x86-based processor with SSE2 extensions, with a processor speed of 800 MHz or higher.
  • Working memory: at least 1 Gb RAM
  • Mass storage: at least 250 GB
  • Display: 15" sufficient resolution of 1360 x 768, recommended 1920 x 1080 (Full HD), non-glossy
  • Graphics card that supports Direct3D 11 video
  • Multiple USB 3 ports
  • HDMI and / or Displayport desirable
  • Wi-Fi (802.11a,b,g,n), Wi-Fi (802.11ac)
  • Battery, lithium-ion (3 cells, 45 Wh) or larger
  • Built-in speakers
  • 3.5 mm audio connector ( 3 or 4 pole)
  • Webcam Full HD 1080P at 30 fps also external
  • Microphone
  • Windows 10 PRO or Home
  • External mouse
  • Internet access (at least DSL 6000)

Recommendations for computer science courses ( Public Administration Informatics in Brandenburg and Business Computing ):

  • Processor: at least 4 cores with a performance index of Passmark 6500.
  • Working memory: 8 Gb RAM
  • Mass storage: at least 250 GB, recommended 512 Gb or 1 TB SSD
  • Display: 15" sufficient is a resolution of 1360 x 768, recommended 1920 x 1080 (Full HD), non-glossy
  • Multiple USB 3 ports
  • HDMI and / or Displayport
  • Network connection RJ 45 MBit/s
  • Wi-Fi (802.11a,b,g,n), Wi-Fi (802.11ac)
  • Battery, lithium-ion (3 cells, 45 Wh) or larger
  • Built-in speakers
  • 3.5 mm audio connector ( 3 or 4 pole)
  • Webcam Full HD 1080P at 30 fps
  • Microphone
  • Windows 10 PRO or Home
  • External mouse
  • Internet access (at least DSL 6000)

For more efficient work, a headset with over-ear and noise-cancelling microphone is recommended. It should be available via USB or via a corresponding connection for headphones and microphone on the device in order to be able to participate in online meetings fully and without interference.

As an alternative to the built-in webcam, an external one can also be used. Here, too, a full HD camera with 30 fps or better is recommended. A built-in microphone can also be an advantage, as they are usually better aligned.

It should also be noted that the weight of more than 2 kg should not be neglected for mobile use.

Furthermore, we recommend the use of so-called SSD mass storage devices, as these no longer have any mechanical moving parts and allow faster access to your data than conventional hard disks.

To work more relaxed at a home office, a second monitor and a keyboard are recommended.

Need a new computer?

If you are thinking of buying a new machine, consider purchasing refurbished technology.

Refurbishing is contemporary and a real alternative, especially from an environmental point of view.

Refurbishing refers to the quality-assured overhaul and repair of products for the purpose of reuse and remarketing.

...and contributes to the avoidance of waste and the conservation of primary resources. [Wikipedia]

Using appropriate search terms such as "refurbished notebooks" will take you to various providers.

However, before you buy such a device, we always recommend researching prices on the net and comparing them with classic providers.
